The
Functional Skeleton, on hanging stand (special model)

This special skeleton was created with the assistance of John Chester M.D.
(orthopedic surgeon and consultant to the Feldenkrais Guild N.A).
The "Functional Skeleton" evolved so as to provide a more realistically movable
skeleton for therapists and educators. The "flexible" spine skeleton is
complemented by all major joints being articulated with elastic cords. There are
more natural head movements on the cervical spine, shoulder/scapular movements
over the rib cage and a more natural hinging at the elbows and wrists. The hips
have full natural range of movement while the knees permit both flexion/
extension and rotation unique this complex weight bearing joint. The small bones
of the hands and feet are mounted on wires to enable mobility. Even the position
of the radial and ulnar bones towards each other during the inward and outward
rotation of the lower arm can be graphically demonstrated.
The skeleton is meant to be taken down from the stand, placed on a padded table
so as to facilitate the demonstration of skeletal movements and thereby enhance
hands on learning
